Reporting to the Assembly Technology Manager, the Welding and Joining Specialist will be responsible for leading the development and continuous improvement of the methods and procedures employed throughout the company for the creation, application, testing and approval of all welding and joining processes. In undertaking this role there will be considerable emphasis on contact and liaison with the plant production operations, product quality and equipment maintenance functions, customers and suppliers. Upon joining the company the priority will be to review all current joining processes and to make recommendations on improvements that should be made to existing equipment, control plans and inspection methodologies to ensure that our approach to the application and validation of joining processes is integrated, robust and consistently applied across all Stadco Manufacturing Sites to meet the demands of our customers. It is foreseen that after this initial plant based activity the workload will then be split equally between Plant Continuous Improvement projects, New Product Introduction (NPI) projects and Research and Development activities.

Key Requirements

Key Accountabilities: · Lead the technical development and improvement of the company methods and procedures for welding and joining processes and the respective standards for equipment and facilities. · Development and maintenance of a standardised approach within the company to the: • Interpretation of the customer's welding and joint requirements and specifications. • Creation, review and authorisation of the Welding Procedure Specifications. • Review and approval of new equipment specifications and designs. • Creation, review and authorisation of the Operator Work Instructions. • Creation, review and authorisation of the Equipment Parameter Schedules. • Testing, validation and approval of new joining processes prior to the start of production. • Destructive and non-destructive testing of products to ensure compliance. • Maintenance, servicing, testing and calibration of all welding and joining equipment. · Provide expert advice to the shop floor production and maintenance functions and assist in troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving welding faults and quality defects. Use problem solving techniques and undertake root cause analysis to identify corrective actions and resultant updates to company standards and processes. · Support the quality function with the testing and inspection of welds and joints and conduct tests to ensure compliance with company standards, international code requirements, and customer specifications. Document inspection and test results and prepare and submits technical reports as required to the customer. · Prepare reference materials and provide training and guidance to both shop floor and staff in welding and joining technology acting as a mentor when required. · Responsible for conducting research, experiments, tests and the evaluation of the results to assist personnel in the development and application of new or improved welding or joining equipment; processes, techniques, procedures, and practices. · Research, understand, document and disseminate the impact on welding and joining processes of the latest developments in material coatings and high strength material grades, covering both steel and aluminium. · Investigate developments in new joining technology and equipment and put forward recommendations and justifications for investment in new capital plant. · In response to customer enquiries provide expert advice on the appropriate welding or joining solution and the associated process times and estimated equipment costs to enable a piece cost to be calculated. · As the welding and joining expert support programme management, engineering, commercial and supply chain personnel in technical and product quality review meetings with customers and suppliers. · Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with the companies TS16949 and ISO 14001 operating procedures. Key Experiences and Qualifications: • A minimum of 5 years experience of Automotive Body in White (Press and Assembly) welding and joining processes for both low volume manual and high volume automated applications. • Familiar with the requirements of BS EN TSO 14554 - 2000 Part 1 &Part 2 - Quality Requirements for Welding - Resistance Welding of Metallic Materials. • Able to read and interpret customer's engineering drawings and welding specifications. • A good understanding of welding fundamentals and theory. • Knowledge of the latest range of products available from welding and joining equipment suppliers with hands on experience of programming, setting up, maintaining and improving such equipment. • A good understanding of destructive and non-destructive inspection and process validation techniques. • An International Institute of Welding (IIW) /European Welding Federation (EWF) Diploma in welding or a similar qualification would be preferred alternatively a HNC / HND or degree in a relevant engineering subject would be considered. • Experience in metallurgical /material science and knowledge of the metallurgical response of different materials to welding is preferred but not essential. • A versatile open working style and an ability to work well within a team environment. • Enthusiastic, self-motivated and capable of working under pressure to achieve customer and project deadlines. • Results driven through a methodical and analytical approach to problem solving with good attention to detail. • Well-developed communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels. • Computer literate, with a good working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience of CAD packages would be an advantage although training will be provided. • A valid UK Driving Licence is essential. • Must be prepared to travel within the UK and occasionally overseas.
